Kids Program FAQ

1. What ages can join kids jiu jitsu classes?

Our classes are designed for children ages 7–15, grouped by age and skill to ensure a safe, supportive environment.

2. Is jiu jitsu safe for kids?

Yes! It focuses on control, technique, and leverage rather than striking. Safety is our top priority—every class is supervised by two experienced coaches, ensuring students receive close guidance while training responsibly.

3. Will my child get hurt?

Minor bumps and bruises may happen, but serious injuries are rare. Kids learn how to fall safely, control their movements, and take care of their partners.

4. Do kids need prior experience?

No! We welcome beginners and advanced students alike. Classes start with fundamentals and progress at each child’s pace.

5. What are the benefits of kids jiu-jitsu?

  • Confidence

  • Discipline and focus

  • Respect for others

  • Physical coordination and fitness

  • Problem-solving and resilience

  • Anti-bullying skills

6. How often should my child train?

We recommend 2–3 classes per week for steady progress. Classes are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:15–6:00 PM.

7. What should my child wear to class?

Comfortable athletic clothing is fine—pockets and zippers should be avoided. If your child decides to compete in tournaments, they will need to wear proper no-gi gear.

8. Are parents allowed to watch classes?

During your child’s first trial week, parents are welcome to observe so you can see how classes run. After enrollment, we ask that parents allow children to train independently. This helps students focus, build confidence, and fully enjoy their learning experience. We provide updates and photos so you can still follow your child’s progress.

9. Do kids compete in tournaments?

Competition is optional. Some students enjoy testing their skills in tournaments, while others train just for fun!

10. How can I get started?

New kids students receive a free trial week. Fill out our form to schedule your child’s first class risk-free.

Meet Our Coaches

Coach Justyne is our head kids coach, a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu black belt with 15 years of experience. Justyne’s approach to jiu jitsu is all about having a good time while sharpening his techniques. He is excited to build a solid kids program at Leverage Jiu Jitsu Colorado.

Coach Meghan is our assistant kids coach. She is a dedicated mom and avid competitor who has been training nearly two years. Meghan has been a wonderful addition to our team—always willing to help others while bringing a positive attitude to every class. Off the mats, she loves animals, gardening, skiing, mountain biking, and cooking for friends and family. Meghan is also passionate about giving back to the community and has helped raise $6,000 to support high school wrestling and combat sport programs.

Coach Daniel is our second assistant kids coach. He has been training jiu jitsu for four years and enjoys the physical and mental challenges it offers. Outside the gym, he loves lifting weights, cooking, and spending time with his two cats: Ricky and Lucy. Daniel sees coaching as an opportunity to encourage others to discover and appreciate their own journey in jiu jitsu. One of the things he values most about the sport is the diverse and welcoming community it attracts—a sport and a lifestyle that can be practiced by anyone.
