A Typical Monday at Leverage Jiu jItsu colorado

If you've been curious about trying jiu jitsu but aren't sure what to expect, this is for you. Here's a real look at what a typical Monday looks like at Leverage Jiu Jitsu Colorado — the classes, the people, and the overall vibe on the mats.

Monday: The Week Kicks Off

Monday usually brings in the regulars — the people who couldn't wait to get back on the mats after the weekend.

We start the day with an all-levels class at noon. Later in the afternoon, we have kids class, then beginners class, and finally another all-levels class to close out the night.

Monday is either the start of a new topic or a continuation of what we worked on the week before. That's part of what makes showing up consistently so important — each class builds on the last, and training regularly is how you start to bridge the gaps in your game.

The Noon Crew

The noon class has its own energy. It's mostly the same group every week — the ones who use that lunch break window to train before the rest of the day gets away from them. The vibe is fun and productive. Nobody is drained from the day yet, which definitely helps.

Once everybody is done rolling, it’s time to clean the mats and get the space ready for the afternoon crew.

Kids Class: Where Fun Takes on a Whole New Meaning

Then comes kids class, and the whole room shifts.

The mats fill up with kids who are very ready to play pretend fighting — but first, the games. The creativity our kids coaches bring to every class is something else. One of the kids’ favorites is simply called “the ball game” — maybe not so creative with names, but the premise is great. They set a yoga ball between two kids, and whoever maintains possession without lifting it off the ground wins.

It sounds simple, but it teaches balance and weight distribution — two concepts that carry directly into jiu jitsu.

The kids have no idea they’re learning. They just know they want to win the ball game. That’s the magic of kids class.

Beginners Class: More Than Just Beginners

After another mat clean, the beginners class starts filling up — and this one might surprise you.

Yes, we have brand new students in there. But we also have experienced students, upper belts, and even black belts on the same mat.

Even as we move up through the ranks, we’re still learning. We’re still refining the basics, and we all help set the tone for the newer students.

We give a lot of credit to the coaches for creating that kind of environment.

Who You'll Meet

One of the first things people notice at Leverage is the mix of people on the mats. On any given Monday, you might train alongside complete beginners trying jiu jitsu for the first time, hobbyists who have been training for years and just love the sport, competitors getting ready for tournaments, and parents who started training after bringing their kid to class.

You’ll also see women on the mats — beginners, competitors, hobbyists, and coaches. As a female black belt and coach, I care a lot about making sure women feel like they have a place here too.

Jiu jitsu has a way of leveling the playing field. It doesn’t matter what you do for work, how athletic you are, or how big you are — everyone starts from the same place on the mat.
