My Kid Doesn't Like Team Sports. Would They Like Jiu Jitsu?
Not every kid loves soccer, basketball, or whatever sport all their friends seem to be playing.
That doesn't necessarily mean they don't like sports. Maybe they just haven't found one that clicks yet.
Jiu jitsu is a little different because it's individual and social at the same time. Kids are responsible for their own progress, but they're still learning with others and becoming part of a group.
There's also no sitting on the sidelines waiting for a chance to play.
They don't have to be one of the best kids in class. Everyone gets to learn and train.
And they don't have to compete either. If they eventually want to, great. If they don't, that's completely fine too. There's plenty to work toward in jiu jitsu without ever stepping into a tournament.
Progress Looks Different Here
One of the cool things about jiu jitsu is kids can see themselves getting better.
Maybe they finally get a technique they've been struggling with. Or maybe they just walk into class a little more confidently than they did a few weeks ago.
It doesn't have to be a huge milestone.
And because jiu jitsu is something most kids have never done before, nobody walks in knowing what they're doing.
Maybe They Just Haven't Found Their Thing Yet
I don't think every kid needs to love jiu jitsu. But if traditional team sports haven't clicked, it might be worth letting them try something completely different.
The only real way to know is to get them on the mats.
Our kids program at Leverage Jiu Jitsu Colorado is for ages 5–15, and new students can try a full week of classes for free. No experience needed.
Maybe jiu jitsu ends up being their thing.
